JOHN VAN ALSTINE Sculpture 1971–2018

The cover of John Van Alstine: Sculpture 1971–2018 features a large piece of slate arching across the upper-left corner of the cover.
A sculpture is composed of a gray river stone balanced on a red steel rod that arches over a large red sphere and two abstract steel elements.
A slab of light gray stone is held in the air by an arc of dark gray steel and an arc of red steel, all balanced on a corrugated red steel cylinder
A charcoal drawing on white paper shows several arcing lines and blurred shapes that denote a sculptural form
A sculpture is composed of a large slab of stone balanced in the air by several arcing steel elements. A small red steel spiral reaches up toward the stone.
A drawing shows several geometric forms balanced on top of one another and are drawn in black, gray, red, and green on white paper.
A red steel ring sits upright on a gray steel base. A slab of stone and an elongated bronze triangle adhere to the back of the disk.
A dark gray steel ring sits upright on a long rectangular steel base. A large stone hangs in the middle of the ring and is attached to the ring’s upper-right edge by a broad arc of steel.
Two sculptures sit on a grassy lawn among trees. One is a large C-shaped piece of dark metal arcing into the tree branches. The other is low profile, with a small spiral reaching up from the ground
Artist John Van Alstine works on one of his large steel sculptural elements while wearing a welding mask and coveralls.
A drawing of a red C-shaped form arcs to the right with a bright green and magenta geometric shape at its end. Gray paint applied in large brushstrokes surrounds the entire form
A sculpture composed of a red steel semicircle sits on a steel base. Three triangular black steel forms are attached to the semicircle and balance a large light gray stone in the air
Inside a large dark gray steel ring a triangular red steel form balances a gray steel cylinder, a red steel wedge, and a light gray stone
John Van Alstine stands with his hand resting on a large piece of steel while wearing his welding mask flipped up as he looks into the camera.
A drawing is composed of three shapes stacked on top of each other. A green semicircle and green triangle have bright orange accents and appear to hold up a larger gray triangle
A large steel ring sits on a pedestal. A red steel form balances inside the ring and holds a triangular stone in the air. The sculpture is outside.

For nearly forty years, John Van Alstine has created abstract sculptures forged from steel and stone. In John Van Alstine:
Sculpture 1971–2018, three notable essayists explore the sculptor’s abstract landscapes that reveal the complex synergy between natural forces and man-made elements. The artist weaves into his works elements of mythology, celestial navigation, implements, human figures, movement, urban forms, and found objects, while using motion, balance, and inertia to incor-porate the eternal forces of gravity, tension, and erosion.

Van Alstine’s works have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions and are found in the permanent
collections of the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Smithsonian’s National
Museum of American Art, and the Phillips Collection, to name but a few. His works are also found in numerous public and private collections. The Artist Book Foundation is gratified to announce the publication of this lavishly illustrated monograph on an esteemed and prolific contemporary artist.

Howard N. Fox is a former senior curatorial fellow of contemporary art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and former curator at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC. Tom Moran is chief curator and artistic director at Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton, New Jersey. A
sculptor in his own right, he has lectured on public art around the country. He has taught at Rutgers University as well as at
the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Tim Kane is a journalist, independent curator, and art critic who has authored numerous articles and art reviews on contemporary artists.
